Background:
Adoption: On February 4, 1999, the Charter of Paris comprising 10 articles was adopted at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium held in Paris, France.
Proclamation: Under Article X of the Charter of Paris, WCD was officially proclaimed to be observed annually on 4 February.
First Observance: The first observance of WCD held on February 4, 2000.
Lead Initiative: WCD is an initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), established in 2000 to unite and support the global cancer community.
Related Observance: India observes National Cancer Awareness Day annually on 7 November to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Ribbon Symbol: The lavender ribbon is universally recognized as a symbol of support for individuals affected by all forms of cancer.
