NSO to Conduct Nationwide Survey on Migration from July 2026 to June 2027In February 2026, the Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge), IC) Rao Inderjit Singh, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), announced that the National Statistics Office (NSO) under MoSPI proposed to conduct a comprehensive Survey on Migration across India from July 2026 to June 2027 to generate updated data on migration patterns, labor mobility, and socio-economic profiles of migrants.
About the Proposed Migration Survey:
Coverage: The survey will capture rural–urban, inter-state, return, and seasonal migration, including reasons for movement, employment characteristics of migrants, and remittance flows.
Labour Profile: The exercise will document employment characteristics of migrants and associated remittance flows.
Migration Rate: As per Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2020–21, India’s overall migration rate was 28.9%, with migration rates of 10.7% for males and 47.9% for females, and nearly 26.8% of the rural population classified as migrants.
Gender: Marriage accounted for 86.8% of female migration, while employment or better employment opportunities drove 22.8% of male migration.
Data Sources:The most recent migration data in India were compiled through the PLFS 2020–21 and the Multiple Indicator Survey 2020–21.
