Background:
Declaration :On February 6, 2003, Stella Obasanjo, then First Lady of Nigeria, formally proclaimed “Zero Tolerance for FGM” in Africa at a conference organised by the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children, marking the first observance of the day.
UN Recognition : Subsequently, February 6 was officially recognised by the UN Sub-Commission on Human Rights as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM.
UNGA Resolution: On December 20, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/67/146, declaring February 6 each year as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
