RBI Approves Blackstone to Acquire 9.99% Stake in Federal BankIn February 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted its approval to American private equity firm Blackstone to acquire an up to 9.99% stake in the Federal Bank Limited, an Indian private sector bank.This proposed investment by Blackstone is set to mark one of the biggest private equity entries into India’s private banking system.Key Details:Background: In December 2025, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved Blackstone to acquire a 9.99% stake in Federal Bank through convertible warrants.Total Investment: As per the proposed arrangement, Blackstone will invest Rs 6,196.51 crore (around USD 700 million) in the private lender through its subsidiary Asia II Topco XIII Pte Ltd via a preferential issue on a private placement basis.Significance: On the completion of transaction, Blackstone will be authorised to nominate a director to the bank’s board as long as its shareholding remains at or above 5%.

MCA Approves Merger of 17 POWERGRID Subsidiaries into Two EntitiesIn February 2026, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) approved two composite schemes of arrangement for the merger and amalgamation of 17 wholly-owned subsidiary companies of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL or POWERGRID) into two other wholly-owned subsidiaries, as part of a major corporate restructuring initiative.The mergers will be effective from April 1, 2024, which has been set as the official date for the amalgamation.Overview of the Merger Schemes:Objective: The restructuring simplifies the corporate structure, reduces costs, improves operational and financial efficiency, and strengthens execution of large transmission projects.Merger Framework: All assets, liabilities, and operations will be transferred to the respective transferee companies, and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) orders will be binding on the shareholders and creditors of both the transferor and transferee entities.Merger Structure: The restructuring consolidates project-specific Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) into larger functional entities through two distinct schemes: Scheme Group-A and Scheme Group-B.Scheme Group-A: Under this scheme, 12 wholly-owned subsidiaries will be merged into ‘POWERGRID Khavda II-C Transmission Limited’.Scheme Group-B: Under this scheme, 5 wholly-owned subsidiaries will be merged into ‘POWERGRID Vataman Transmission Limited’.

MoC&I Secretary Rajesh Agarwal Launches India-Australia Business Case Studies CompendiumIn February 2026, Rajesh Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), launched the “India–Australia Business Case Studies Compendium” titled “Pitch Perfect Australia-India: Perfect Conditions for a USD 100 Billion Partnership” to promote bilateral trade, investment, and industry collaboration between India and Australia.About the India-Australia Business Case Studies Compendium:Overview: The compendium presents successful India–Australia business collaborations and documents best practices, market-entry strategies, regulatory experiences, and innovation-led partnerships, serving as a practical reference for businesses, startups, investors, and policymakers.Objectives: It aims to promote two-way trade and investment, encourage industry-to-industry collaboration, and support the effective implementation of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).Developer: The compendium was jointly developed by Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and Newland Global Group.Key Sectors Covered: The publication covers sectors such as manufacturing and critical minerals, education and skill development, technology and innovation, agriculture and food processing, and clean energy.
