GoI to Set Up Bureau of Port Security to Boost Port, Vessel Security
In December 2025, Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) convened a high-level meeting for the formation of a dedicated body, the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS), aimed to improve the security of vessels, and port facilities across the country.

  • The meeting, held in New Delhi(Delhi), was attended by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).

About BoPS:
Statutory Body: The newly announced body will be established as a statutory body under the provisions of Section 13 of the new Merchant Shipping Act, 2025.
Administered by: BoPS, modelled on the lines of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), will work under the MoPSW.
Head: As per the MHA, Director General (DG) of the rank of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer at Pay Level-15, will head the BoPS.
Key Functions: The body will manage security information for ports and vessels, emphasizing cybersecurity and safeguarding port Information Technology (IT) infrastructure.
Role of CISF:The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), designated as a Recognised Security Organisation (RSO), will assess port security, prepare security plans, and train Private Security Agencies (PSAs).
