Renowned Indian Sculptor and Padma Awardee Ram Vanji Sutar Passed AwayOn 17th December 2025, renowned Indian sculptor and Padma awardee Ram Vanji Sutar, designer of the world’s tallest statue ‘the Statue of Unity’, passed away in Noida, Uttar Pradesh (UP), at the age of 100 years. He was born on 19th February 1925 in Dhule, Maharashtra.

  • He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1999 in the field of Art and Padma Bhushan in 2016 in the field of Art.

Specialisation: He specialised in bronze and realistic sculptures that combine fine artistry with large-scale engineering.
Landmark Works:

  • Statue of Unity: He created the 182-metre(m) Statue of Unity at Kevadia, Gujarat, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the world’s tallest statue.
  • Kempe Gowda: He sculpted the 108-foot statue of Kempe Gowda installed at Bengaluru International Airport, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Chambal Monument: He designed the 45-foot-tall Chambal monument in Madhya Pradesh.

Mythological Works: He co-created the bronze Krishna Arjun Rath Monument at Brahma Sarovar with Anil R. Sutar in 2008.
Gandhi Sculptures: 

  • Works in India: He designed the seated meditative statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Parliament complex (Delhi) and sculpted the bronze Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vidhan Soudha (Bengaluru).
  • Global Installations: His sculptures and busts of Mahatma Gandhi have been installed in over 450 cities worldwide, including Hanover (Germany) and Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane (Australia) (2024).

Shivaji Statue: He created the equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the Parliament complex (Delhi).
Ongoing Projects: He was involved in the design of the proposed Lord Ram statue in Ayodhya (UP) and contributed to the design of the upcoming Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mumbai (Maharashtra).
Awards: He received the Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony in 2018 and the Maharashtra Bhushan Puraskar in 2025.
