Background:
Launch: WLD was first launched in India in 2019 to raise awareness about rising liver disease cases.
Expansion: The day expanded into a global observance in 2023 by major international liver health organisations, which are now jointly urging the World Health Organization (WHO) to formally recognise April 19 as WLD worldwide.
Collaborating Organisations: Key global bodies involved include the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL); Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), Asociacion Latinoamericana para el Estudio del Higado (ALEH), and Society on Liver Disease in Africa (SOLDA).
