Background:
Origin: National Maritime Day (NMD) was initiated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), Government of India (GoI).
First Observance: The first National Maritime Day was observed on 5 April 1964.
Maritime Week 2026: National Maritime Week 2026 also known as Merchant Navy Week, was observed from 29 March to 5 April 2026, culminating in the 63rd NMD.
