MeitY Launches 30 kW Wide Band Gap-Based Integrated Drive System for EVs
In March 2026, S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched an indigenously developed 30 kilowatts (kW) Wide Band Gap (WBG)-based Integrated Drive System (IDS) for electric vehicle (EV) applications at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN), to strengthen India’s self-reliance in the electric vehicle (EV) powertrain segment.
About the WBG-Based IDS:
Objective: The initiative aims to reduce import dependency on EV powertrain systems, lower system costs through localization, and support scalable manufacturing under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
Design: The system integrates the electric motor and inverter into a compact, high power-density unit based on Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) architecture, utilizing Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) power modules for higher efficiency, thermal stability, and improved performance.
