Abhinav Bindra Concludes IOC Athletes’ Commission Tenure
In February 2026, Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold-medallist, announced the completion of his eight-year tenure (2018-2026) as Vice-Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission

  • He was succeeded by Humphrey Kayange, a Kenyan rugby player, as the Second Vice-Chair IOC Athletes’ Commission during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games.

About Abhinav Bindra:
Olympic Gold: Abhinav Bindra became India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist by winning the men’s 10-metre (m) air rifle at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Beijing, China, and was the first Indian to simultaneously hold both the World Championship (2006) and Olympic titles in the same event.
Major Games: His achievements include seven medals at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) and three at the Asian Games (AG).
Honours: He received the Arjuna Award (in 2000), Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (in 2002), and Padma Bhushan (in 2009) for his contribution in the field of Sports.
Authorship: He penned A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold (2011), published by HarperCollins India.
IOC Journey: He was elected as a member IOC in 2018, elevated to the position of Vice Chair in 2024, and his current term is set to conclude in 2028.
About IOC’s Athletes’ Commission: It consists of Chair Pau Gasol and three Vice-Chairs Maja Włoszczowska, Humphrey Kayange, and Oluseyi Smith and 10 elected and 7 appointed members. It was established in 1981.
