Background:
Origin: The idea of WMD evolved from Africa Malaria Day, launched in 2001 by African nations after the Abuja Declaration, endorsed by 44 malaria-endemic countries at the African Summit on Malaria.
Establishment: WMD was instituted by member states of the World Health Organization(WHO) during the World Health Assembly(WHA) 2007.
First Observance: The inaugural World Malaria Day was observed on 25 April 2008.
