The United Nations (UN’s) first-ever International Day of Women in Industry (IDWI) was observed across the globe on 21 April 2026 to recognise women’s contributions to industrial development and promote gender equality in global industry.

Background:
Declaration: In 2025, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) proclaimed 21 April as IDWI through a landmark resolution adopted at its 21st session of the UNIDO General Conference during the Global Industry Summit 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with support from Member States.
Establishment: The date 21 April was chosen to mark both UNIDO’s commitment to gender equality and the anniversary of its first Gender Policy entering into force in 2009, embedding gender equality into industrial development.
2026 Event: The inaugural observance was organised by UNIDO at the Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria, featuring high-level sessions, panel discussions, the “ELLEvate – Women Shaping Industry” exhibition, and the Gender Equality Mobilization (GEM) Award ceremony.
