Background:
Proclamation: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 21 February as International Mother Language Day (IMLD) on 17 November 1999.
Observance: The first International Mother Language Day (IMLD) was observed on 21 February 2000.
Recognition: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) formally recognised the observance through Resolution 56/262 in 2002.
