World Chagas Disease Day (WCDD) is observed annually across the globe on 14th April to raise awareness about Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis), a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T.cruzi).

Background:
Approval: In May 2019, during the 72nd World Health Assembly (WHA), the World Health Organization (WHO) officially designated April 14 as WCDD.
Recognition: The WHO recognized Chagas disease as a NTD in 2005.
First Observance: The first-ever WCDD was observed on April 14, 2020.
Discovery: The disease was first identified on April 14, 1909, by Carlos Justiniano Ribeiro Chagas in a child in Brazil, after whom it is named.
