In March 2026, Australian think tank Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) published the latest edition of Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2026, which indicates a significant shift in the global security landscape. For the first time since the index’s inception, Pakistan has been ranked as the country most impacted by terrorism, with an overall score of 8.574, recording 1,139 deaths and 1,045 terrorist incidents in 2025, the highest fatality levels since 2013.
- India has been ranked at 13th spot with an overall score of 6.428.
About GTI 2026:
Methodology: The countries are ranked based on their respective composite scores which measures the impact of terrorism. For each country, GTI score ranges from 0 to 10; where 0 represents no impact from terrorism and 10 represents the highest measurable impact of terrorism.
Global Trends: As per the index, terrorist incidents in 2025 were nearly six times higher than in 2020. However, terrorism-related incidents decreased by 22% to 2,944, which marks the lowest figures since 2007.
- The index highlighted that global terrorism deaths declined by 28% to 5,582 in 2025.
Most Impacted Countries: Other top countries impacted by terrorism, this year, Burkina Faso slipped to 2nd rank in GTI with an overall score of 8.324; followed by Niger (3rd), Nigeria (4th) and Mali (5th).
